Why did you choose IT?

I have always enjoyed working with computers. I was surfing the internet from the age of eleven. I loved to game, built my own computers, and solved tough problems. However, I did not choose to study computer science. When I failed to obtain a university degree in History after Greek-Latin, I lost my motivation.

Today I find it in my job. I work as a consultant for In4Matic at Unilin, the producer of Quick-Step. I solve first-line problems such as forgotten passwords, network problems, broken computers … Not easy to solve every problem, but with the help of my cool colleagues I can. – Ruben Vandoorne

How did you find this job?

I was a postman at bpost for six years. In five municipalities, I alternated between 30 rounds. But it was not a job for me. When I got fired after knee problems, I took my chance. I started to delve into what I really liked to do: something with computers. For this I immediately went to VDAB, which organizes good and free IT training courses for the unemployed. After an entrance test and waiting period, the six months of practical training started. In a short time we got a solid foundation. During the Individual Professional Training (IBO) that followed, I immediately found work with a permanent contract. – Ruben Vandoorne

What does your future look like?

I already find it fantastic to have an exciting job. I like to solve problems, I like to work with my head. I prefer to repair hardware. It’s great to take something apart and install new parts. Today I am still very much behind because I just started in IT. But because I learn in my job every day, I grow fast. – Ruben Vandoorne
